President Donald Trump is expected to impose a shocking 104% tariff on all imports from China on Wednesday, according to a statement by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, as reported by CNN.
This comes on top of existing tariffs that were already in place before Trump’s second term.
China was already anticipating a 34% increase in tariffs on Wednesday, as part of Trump’s “reciprocal” tariff package. However, the President added another 50% after Beijing failed to withdraw its promise to impose punitive 34% tariffs on American goods by noon Tuesday—bringing the total increase in duties to an additional 84%.
Earlier on Tuesday, China’s Ministry of Commerce said it “strongly opposes” the additional 50% tariffs on Chinese imports, calling them “a mistake on top of a mistake.” The Ministry pledged to escalate retaliation against U.S. exports.
